Did you come to the Netherlands for a job or your education? Finding a house can be challenging, especially if you have a tight budget. However, the Dutch government provides its inhabitants with rental allowance. At the Leidse Rechtswinkel, we can help you with your application.

How does rental allowance work?

In the Netherlands, there are 2 types of housing: public housing (so-called ‘sociale huur’) or private sector. To accomodate citizens in need of affordable housing, one can apply for rental allowance (‘huurtoeslag’). This can only be done for the public housing. The application process is complex and requires a lot of personal details. For instance, the rental allowance depends on both age and income. If you are eligible, this could impact your rent significantly. You might receive a monthly allowance to help pay for the rent.

Are you eligible?

To find out if you are eligible for rental allowance, we kindly ask you to make an appointment with our office. We do not provide any (legal) advise over the phone or by email. During the appointment, we have the time to assess your situation and see what we can do.

What to bring?

In order to determine if you are eligible for rental allowance, please bring the following documents with you to the appointment:

  • A form of ID, preferably a passport or ID card;
  • An income statement;
  • A rental agreement stating the rent.
    your DigiD code.

If you do not have a DigiD code, we can help you with applying for one.
